A New Era Begins

A Landmark is Born

Midtown East has long been a cornerstone of innovation and influence, shaping not just New York City but the world. The neighborhood underwent a dramatic transformation in the early 1900s when the New York Central Railroad, under the Vanderbilt family’s leadership, electrified its tracks and moved them underground. This pivotal change set the stage for rapid development, leading to the rise of sophisticated Park Avenue residences, striking skyscrapers, and renowned luxury hotels—including what is now the InterContinental New York Barclay. Explore the timeline below to discover the hotel’s remarkable journey through the decades.

The Beginning: Terminal City

In 1925, architect Eliot Cross and real estate developer W. Seward Webb leased land on Lexington Avenue from the Vanderbilt-owned New York Central Realty and Terminal Corporation. Their vision for a luxury residential hotel took shape as part of Terminal City. Later that year, construction began on The Barclay, designed in neo-Federal, American Colonial style by Cross and Cross—the firm behind the iconic Tiffany & Co. building.

Eliot and John Cross, connected to New York’s elite, founded Cross and Cross in 1906. Eliot, a Harvard graduate, managed business, while John, trained at Yale and the École des Beaux-Arts, led design. Their firm, favored by old New York, also partnered in real estate ventures near Grand Central. Notable works include the General Electric Building and Tiffany & Co. on Fifth Avenue.

The Barclay debuted on October 26, 1926, with a grand dinner-dance hosted by Eliot Cross. Pre-opening ads targeted long-term residents, with annual rates from $1,200 to $5,550, positioning it as a premier choice for the elite. The hotel quickly gained acclaim for its refined comfort and elegance.

The Opening Dance

The Barclay’s opening was a discreet affair—a private dinner-dance for New York’s old-money elite, with minimal publicity to maintain its exclusive image. No ribbon-cuttings or celebrity fanfare, just word-of-mouth prestige. Demand surged so quickly that 100 additional rooms were converted within weeks, cementing the hotel’s success.

The First Tennant: Caswell-Massey

Founded in 1752 as an apothecary in Newport, Rhode Island, Caswell-Massey is America’s original purveyor of fine personal care products. For over 250 years, it has served esteemed clients, from the Founding Fathers to Hollywood legends, even crafting George Washington’s cologne, still sold today. In 1926, it became The Barclay’s first tenant, opening its flagship store and remaining for 84 years until 2010. One of the nation’s oldest businesses, it continues its legacy today.

Grand Central Station & Park Avenue

As New York City expanded in the 20th century, Midtown emerged as a hub for business and residential growth, driving demand for hotels catering to rail travelers. Advances in construction enabled building over the tracks, transforming entire blocks into prime real estate. This development led to the creation of a tree-lined meridian with benches and winding paths—giving rise to what the New York Central Railroad aptly named Park Avenue.
