Once under Venetian rule, Montenegro is thought to have once been an island which later joined the shore by a slip of sand. Today, you'll discover a trio of historic churches: Santa María de Punta, built in the 9th century, San Ivan, constructed in the 7th century, and Holy Trinity, an Orthodox church, completed in 1804 and made from pink and honey-coloured stone.

Back in the 1960s and 70s, Montenegro was known as the Saint-Tropez of the Adriatic thanks to visiting Hollywood stars. For a taste of yesteryear, visit the charming 15th century fishing village of Sveti Stefan.
