Arapahoe Basin is a widely popular spot in the area for skiing and biking. It offers more than 1400 acres, nine lifts, seven distinct terrain areas, the longest ski and ride season in Colorado, and some of the highest terrain in North America.
For history buffs, cross-country skiers and snowshoers, the trek to Sally Barber Mine offers something for everyone on this 3-mile out-and-back trail. The 365-foot-deep mine was established in 1880 by a group of Bald Mountain miners. It was a long-time producer of rich zinc ore and operated until 1909. Much of the original mining equipment sits on display to check out before either continuing on through the network of trails in the area or hiking or skiing down the gradual descent.
With creek crossings through sometimes rocky terrain, wildlife aplenty, and elevation change enough to keep it interesting, this is a good 4.5 mile "local's loop" in the high country of Summit County.
North Pond Park is a unique mountain wetland and pond area and is home to nesting osprey and quality fishing. A small enclosed pavilion can be used year round or as a warming hut in the winter. When conditions allow, ice skating is available on the pond. Be sure to bring your own skates as there are no rentals available on site. Other amenities include 2 docks, a short walking trail, gas fire pit, and an open air pavilion.
