Big Brutus

The largest electric shovel in the United States, Big Brutus is the largest attraction in Southeast Kansas. It worked the mines up until April 1974. Big Brutus retired outside of the strip pit from its last job. In 1984, P&M coal company donated Big Brutus, 16 acres of surrounding land and $100,000 to restore Big Brutus and create a museum and memorial dedicated to the coal mining histroy in Southeast Kansas.
