The Foundation has a museum, which houses the Founder’s private collection, alongside a collection of modern and contemporary art; an orchestra and a choir; an art library and archive; a scientific research institute; and a garden, in a central area of the city of Lisbon, where educational activities also take place.

The construction began in the half of the 12th century, after the city was taken to the Moors and built over the existent mosque by D. Afonso Henriques, and today itself presents as a mixture of architectural styles. It is classified as a National Monument since 1910.

Basilica da Estrela, is a Catholic temple, presents characteristics of the final Baroque style and the neoclassical, and was a former convent of Carmelite nuns.

The Convento do Carmo is a former convent of the Order of the Carmelites of the Old Observance, and was founded by D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, the Constable of Portugal, in 1389, with Gothic architecture. The Archaeological Museum of Carmo, was founded in 1863 and was the first museum of Art and Archeology of the country.

The Neogothic style elevator was built at the turn of the 19th century to the 20th with the design of the engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard. From the top of the elevator you can enjoy a privileged view over the historic area of Lisbon.
