Panama Canal Miraflores Locks

The Panama Canal locks is a lock system that lifts a ship up 85 feet (26 metres) to the main elevation of the Panama Canal and down again. It has a total of six steps (three up, three down for a ship's passage). The total length of the lock structures, including the approach walls, is over 3 kilometres (nearly two miles). They are one of the greatest engineering works ever to be undertaken at the time, when they opened in 1914.

Panama La Vieja

Panama Viejo (Old Panama) was founded in 1519 by the Spanish. It was the first city on the West coast of the Americas and served as a the gateway city for the Spanish conquest of Latin America. All the loot sacked from the Inca empire in Peru came through here. Once a thriving city of 10,000, today's extensive ruins are the result of an attack by English pirate Henry Morgan in 1671 which, along with a fire, leveled the city. There is a small museum.
