Liverpool Neighbourhoods

Neighbourhoods in London

Liverpool has changed from the working-class city of the 1800s to a thriving mix of entertainment, culture and restaurants. The city is broken into seven neighborhoods, called quarters.

Experience the Elegance of the Georgian Quarter

Home to the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall for over 175 years, the Georgian Quarter is a combination of Georgian terraced housing and modern convenience. The elegant city center housing sits within the cultural haven that includes the Metropolitan Cathedral and the world's second-largest cathedral, the Anglican Cathedral. With numerous bars, bistros and coffee shops, the Georgian Quarter welcomes visitors to engage and enjoy its culture.

See the History of Liverpool's Chinatown

The first Chinatown established in Europe is in Liverpool. Marked by the tallest standing arch in any Chinatown outside of mainland China, this part of town is known for Chinese and pan-Asian restaurants and supermarkets and its diverse mix of culture. Every February, celebrate the Chinese new year with festival, parades and food.

The Chinatown arch itself was built piece by piece with each brick imported from Shanghai directly. It stands 13 meters tall and is the most recognizable Chinese arch in Europe.

Enjoy the Culture and Diversity of Ropewalks

Another of the famous Liverpool neighborhoods is Ropewalks. Named after 19th-century practices where ropes were laid out for sail to ships in the harbor, this area is now known for art, music and culture.  The Bohemian experience on Bold Street has an eclectic mix of coffee houses and restaurants as well as independent stores and live music. Students and young professionals frequent the cultural institutions, chic hotels and apartments that are famous for their vibrant food, drinks and live music. Stop in to Dig Vinyl for your vintage finds or Kazimier Garden for the personal experience.

Explore the Baltic Triangle

During the 1800s, this part of Liverpool was the industrial area with factories and workshops. Now the Baltic Triangle is a cutting-edge destination in the heart of the Liverpool scene.  Cafes, community gardens, live music and art fairs can be found along the streets and side roads of the Baltic Triangle. Stop in to Camp and Furnace for your choice of lobster or street food that suits this lively neighborhood perfectly.

Experience the Beauty of the Waterfront

The Waterfront neighborhood is home to Liverpool's impressive collection of national museums, including Tate Liverpool, Mersey Maritime Museum and The International Slavery Museum. Each institution tells the story of the extensive history of the city in addition to showcasing priceless works of art.  The bustling waterfront is also home to ferry terminals, cruise terminals, a state-of-the-art convention center, high-end hotels and many fine-dining establishments for visitors and locals alike.

Enjoy the Arts in Saint George's Quarter

Boasting some of the finest architecture in Britain, St. George's Hall is a shining example of neo-classical architecture. The building itself is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  St. George's Quarter is an introduction to the arts and culture. With three theatres only a five-minute walk from each other, you can stop into your choice of entertainment variety shows, musicals, operas or pop concerts. William Brown Street features only cultural attractions including Walker Art Gallery, World Museum and Central Library, all of which are free to enter.

Trace Beatles' History in the Cavern Quarter

Cavern Quarter encircles Mathew Street and features many opportunities to reminisce on the rock band, The Beatles. The annual summer music event, International Beatles Week, is held in this quarter.  Take the time to visit the musical "wall of fame" or take a selfie with the John Lennon tribute statue. On each street of the quarter, music and vendors abound. You'll enjoy area food while bouncing along to your favorite tunes.

Come to Liverpool for the culture, diversity, food or entertainment. The history alone will enthrall you, and the experience will stay with you forever.
