The city of Hamburg is a mixture of old and new. It is known for its traditional, as well as its innovative, approach to neighbourhood renewal. Thanks to its status as an international port city, Hamburg is composed of a large, diverse international population that uniquely influences each neighbourhood.

Walk the Elbe River in the Riverfront District

A recently developed area, the Riverfront District has become more tourist-friendly. Enjoy a lovely walk along the picturesque Elbe while you shop for your evening meal at the Sunday morning fish market. You can also visit restaurants like Hamburger Fischmarkt or La Vela and bars along the way or hop on one of the day or evening cruises to take more photos of your trip.

Experience Hamburg's History in Old City

Considered Hamburg's city center, Old City is the center of the city and a visual representation of its wealth and power throughout history. Appreciate the intricate designs in the architecture as you visit St. Michaelis Church and the area churches, monuments and city buildings. Take your time along the pedestrian walkways, shop along the harbor or just commemorate the views with pictures of the area. Visit Hamburg's "new town," Neustadt, while you're touring to get a full feel of the city center.

Have Brunch in St. Georg

Hamburg's proud LGBTQ neighbourhood, St. Georg, features stunning architecture, eclectic cafes for breakfast, lunch and brunch and quaint shopping boutiques. Stop at Cafe Koppel for a slice of cake to eat in the garden and refuel for the rest of your day. Enjoy the pop-up bars and food stands in a relaxed, family-friendly environment.

Spend a Night of Dancing in Sternschanze

During the day, you'll find a suburban feel in Sternschanze. But the evening offers nightclubs, bars, restaurants and cafes to dance the night away. Try Silly Walks Discotheque for a Reggae mix and lots of fun.

Considered a multicultural bohemian neighbourhood, you'll find a selection of flavors to choose from for your meals, and your choice in musical venue for that night's dancing. Ottensen high street is nearby for additional shopping and clubbing.

Visit Ottensen for the Arts

The vibrant district of Ottensen has transformed from an industrial neighbourhood into one of multicultural arts and entertainment. An example of this transformation is Zeisehallen. Once an old factory, it has been reimagined into a multiuse facility that now houses a restaurant, art gallery, and cinema. Die Fabrik, another popular location in Ottensen, was changed from an ammunition depot into a popular concert hall. You can watch your favorite band in this piece of Hamburg history.

Experience St. Pauli's Entertainment

Known as Hamburg's gritty, entertaining and culturally rich neighbourhood, St. Pauli is home to countless restaurants, cafes and art galleries. It is also known as the red light district of the city and offers more adult-centered activities once night falls. If you're visiting during the day, there are plenty of activities in the area and you can stop at INDRA, where the Beatles performed early in their career.

See Urban Regeneration in HafenCity

The newest quarter in Hamburg, HafenCity, is currently undergoing an urban renewal process. Developers have turned industrial buildings and warehouses into upscale residential living, offices, shops, museums and hotels.  As you walk the streets of the quarter, you can note the progress of this massive rebuilding effort with its completed projects as well as the empty warehouses awaiting renewal.

Visit the International Maritime Museum while you're in the neighbourhood to see 3,000 years worth of maritime history on display, plus a section on marine research.

Hamburg is a city that embraces the old and the new. All of these neighbourhoods in Hamburg provide examples of this unique quality, and all are enriched as a result. Whether you prefer the history of Old City or the fish market in Riverfront, Hamburg has everything you need to enjoy your trip and keep you entertained.
