Local Tips 

Important local information to assist you in your Umrah. 

Weather 

Summers in Makkah and Madinah can reach over 40 °C in the day. In winter, daytime temperatures range from 25 - 30 °C. 

Currency 

Local currency is the Saudi Riyal (SAR). Foreign currency can be easily exchanged in Makkah & Madinah.
 

Transport 

Makkah and Madinah have local bus services and taxis. Both cities connect to the airport via the Haramain high-speed train. 

Packing and preparation 

Pack wisely and stay updated - consider these useful tips as you prepare. 

Clothing 


Pack light clothing and
comfortable shoes. 

 

Accessories 


Consider an Ihram belt for your
valuables, and a light bag for carrying
footwear inside the Masjid. 
 

Documentation 


If you’re taking any
prescription medicines, bring a
doctor’s letter for authorization. 
 

Nutrition


Pack some dried fruits or
small nutritious snacks for
sustenance. 

 

Other useful items 


A small hand towel is useful
after Wudu - this can be carried
in your Masjid bag.

Social etiquette during Umrah

To ensure a positive experience, follow these guidelines.

Dress 


Islamic dress codes must be
followed prior to Ihram and
after, modest clothing should
be observed. 
 

During Ihram 


Follow the rules and restrictions
of Ihram. Consult with a Faqih if
in doubt. 

 

Considerations for women 


Single women are no longer required
to travel with a mahram or tour group.
They are allowed to perform Umrah by themselves.

As you fulfill your pilgrimage, you may find these tips useful. 

Asking advice 


Questions regarding Fiqh? At
the Masjid Haram, there is a Q&A
booth outside the entrance. 


 

Wheelchair access 


For the elderly or infirm, Tawaf can
be done with a wheelchair on the
first level of Masjid Al Haram. 
On the second level mobility scooters
can be booked.
 

Alternative prayer area 


For a quieter place to pray for
women, go to the 2nd floor of
the Masjid Haram.


 

Air-conditioning


In hot weather, you may wish to
pray Jumu’ah in the New Haram
Extension- the Ground level and
the upper level of Haram.

 

Doing Tawaf at night


Sensitive to heat? Consider
doing your Tawaf after Isha. The
Masjid Haram will be cooler. 


 

When in Madinah


Visit Ziyarat sites between sunrise
and Dhuhr prayer, for easier access.

Drinking water


Be sure to only consume water that’s
safe for drinking. Choose either
Zamzam water or labeled, bottled
drinking water only.
 

Hair grooming


When cutting or shaving hair after
Umrah, it’s preferably to use your
hotel hair salon whenever possible.

 

Lost something


Did you lose something valuable during your Umrah? At the Masjid Al Haram, there is a Lost & Found booth outside the entrance.
